01 Sell a subscription

On the Growth plan and up, a product without options can be sold as a subscription. Open it, and under “Lifecycle, gift wrap, returns” tick the “Subscribe & Save” box.

Shoppers choose “Weekly”, “Monthly” or “Quarterly”. Their card is saved on your own Stripe account, and the first charge comes one interval later.

Each renewal charges the saved card and creates a paid order, ready to ship. The same billing period can never be charged twice.

02 What shoppers manage

Shoppers manage their own subscriptions from their account on your store: skip the next one, pause, swap products, change card or cancel.

“Subscriptions” shows “Monthly recurring revenue”, “Active subscribers” and “Churned this month”, and you can “Pause”, “Resume” or “Cancel” any of them.

Cancelling is final and removes the saved card. For a break, pause instead.

Every renewal, pause, skip, swap and cancellation is logged, so you always have a record of what was billed and why.

03 When a renewal fails or is held

A declined renewal is retried after one, three and five days, and each time the shopper is emailed a link to update their card.

After the last try it is paused, never cancelled, and it starts again once the shopper updates their card.

Each row shows its “Storefront”. One that charges in another currency offers no “Subscribe & Save”, and renewals there show Renewal on hold, and why.

Nothing is charged then. One agreed in another currency is never charged: cancel it and ask the customer to subscribe again.

04 Gift cards

In “Gift cards” under Catalog, press “Issue gift card”. Enter the amount and, if you like, a recipient email and an expiry date.

Press “Create gift card”, then “Copy” in the banner at the top of the page. Issuing does not email it, so send the code yourself.

The banner is the only place the full code is shown. After that, the list shows its last 4 characters, and nobody on your team can look the code up again.

If a code is lost before it reaches its owner, void the card and issue a new one. A shopper with an account on your store still sees their full codes there.

Shoppers enter it at checkout, and cashiers choose “Gift card” at the till. “Void” stops a code for good.

The page keeps “Cards issued”, “Total value issued” and “Balance remaining” across all your cards.

05 Sell gift cards online

To sell gift cards on your store, press “Add product” in Products and set “Product type” to “Gift card — store credit sent by email”.

Under “Amounts buyers can choose”, type whole amounts with commas, up to 12, such as 25, 50, 100. Leave it empty to let buyers type any amount from 5 to 1,000.

It is listed at its smallest amount. A gift card has no stock, shipping or variants, and discount codes, sales and offers never apply to it.

At checkout the buyer picks an amount and enters the recipient’s email, with an optional message and delivery date. Each card gets its own code, emailed then or on that date.

Once a product has been ordered, its type is locked: add a new product instead. Gift card products sell online; a card sold at the till is issued from “Gift cards”.

06 Loyalty and the VIP club

In “Loyalty”, set “Points earned per unit spent”. Points are added when an order is paid, at the till too.

Press “New reward type”, such as a percentage off or store credit, and set the “Min points required”. It waits in “Pending approval” until you approve it.

In “VIP club”, set the “Minimum orders” and a tag name, then press “Sync tags now”. Use the tag in campaigns and promotions. Next: stock and suppliers.
